I’ve only been a New York Jets fan for a short period of time—although that does not detract from my team loyalty. However, I decided to declare my allegiance to the New York Jets in 2008—the year that Brett Favre was quarterback. I’ve decided to record some of the top highlights for the Jets in newspaper covers from over the past four years.
Brett Favre Doesn’t Bring the New York Jets to the Super Bowl
An oldie but a goodie from the Daily News. Remember when Brett Favre was signed to the New York Jets in an attempt to put the team in the Super Bowl? Remember when the Jets didn’t make it to the Super Bowl? I have to applaud Favre for his valiant attempt; however, the team’s record in 2008 was hardly any better than the numbers Mark Sanchez puts up. That being said, Brett Favre could have stood to stay in retirement. Instead, he did a short run with the Vikings (Packers fans loved that).

The Rex Ryan Foot Fetish Scandal
Rex Ryan became the butt of many a joke in late 2010 after a video surfaced of his wife, Michelle, in foot fetish videos. Rex Ryan was apparently the voice behind the camera, although this was never fully confirmed. Needless to say, the foot jokes haven’t ended for poor Rexy. Part of the reason that I love the New York Jets is because of the team’s personality. The New York Post is always good for a pun, and this newspaper cover didn’t disappoint.

The Rexterminator v. The New England Patriots
On the same day, the New York Post published this cover featuring New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan dressed up as an exterminator. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, decked out in team gear, are both portrayed as rats. I don’t know what I love more—Tom Brady’s Mousy Hair or the fact that Belichick can’t see out of his horrifically hideous Patriots beanie.

New York Jets: America’s Super Heroes (Sort Of)
Its hard to compare Mark Sanchez’s throw to anything superhuman or extraordinary. But, I wouldn’t mind if Darrelle Revis rescued me from a burning building. The Daily News and New York Post both have some really talented graphic designers, as them seem to portray Rex Ryan’s gut perfectly in every newspaper cover.
New York Jets and New England Patriots: An Undying Rivalry
This New York Post cover featuring the New York Jets and New England Patriots as characters of Star Wars had me dying the first time I saw it. Once again, Rex Ryan’s gut and sweater vest are illustrated perfectly. Bill Belichick as Darth Vader? Dead on. In a huge victory, the Jets beat the Patriots 28-21 in the first round of AFC Championships for the 2010-2011 season. Despite high hopes, the Jets still didn’t make it to the Super Bowl (sensing a trend?).

Peyton Manning and Mark Sanchez: Jets Dream Team?
Following major neck surgery, Peyton Manning took a season off from the Indianapolis Colts to recover. Leaving the Colts last in the league, the future doesn’t look too bright for the star quarterback’s future with the team. Having first first pick, its rumored that the Colts have their eye on rookie Andrew Luck—and the Jets have their eye on Manning. Although this is just a rumor, Rex Ryan recently announced that he is excited about some “changes” for the 2012 season. Although Ryan has publicly supported Sanchez, there is a possibility that Mark Sanchez and Peyton Manning could share locker rooms. Time will only tell.

What is your favorite Jets image to grace the pages of a New York newspaper cover?
